Society-Wide Family Program Seeks Experts

February 19, 2014 by East Kingdom Gazette

badge Chancellor MinorGreetings to the artists, scientists, and sundry populace of the East Kingdom,

Society is in the process of rolling out a new Youth And Family Achievement program designed to expose youths between the ages of 5-17 to many of the varied activities that we do in the SCA. The program is a cross between a modern scouting badge program and a medieval apprenticeship. Families choose a topic, are given a list of mentors who teach that topic, then the child meets with the mentor at official SCA practices and events to complete the tasks laid out in the program. If you would like more information about the program, you can read the FAQ: http://sca.org/YAFA-FAQ.pdf

I am currently looking for people willing to be mentors in the following categories:

Archery, Arms & Armour, Equestrian, Family Life, Music, Pottery, Woodworking

April Fool’s Scribal Contest

February 13, 2014 by East Kingdom Gazette

badge East Tyger Clerk of the SignetThe website of the East Kingdom College of Scribes posted a challenge phrased with such creative language that the Gazette is reprinting it in its entirety below.

Greetings unto all to whom these present letters shall come!

Some of you may or may not have heard of the College of Heralds Imaginary. Some of you might even be a part of that amazing group of volunteers, but of course, can neither confirm nor deny that information with us. No matter. We, the scribes and various artisans of the East Kingdom, have come to hep- er, help you, in putting some “finishing touches” on your artwork for you.

You see, we’ve noticed that each year, a letter of intent is released to the public, displaying what appear to be documentable names (sometimes with devices) with an often silly tone. Ace Pilot, Feare-God Zillah, Antony Stark, Imma Rockstar, and many other favorites.

We’ve also noticed that the East does things a little…. differently. Since we do not have the same customs for achievements of Arms (for example, on a full coat of Arms, in the East anyone can have mantling on a torse, display one or two supporters, etc.), we thought we would provide our assistance. Thus, all who read this missive are hereby invited to create a full coat of Arms (achievement of Arms), displaying the heraldry contained in the pages linked to from here:

Rules? Well, yes, there are rules for this challenge… (more…)

February 12, 2014 by East Kingdom Gazette
Baronessa Maria Pagani and Baron Juan Xavier tribtue to the Patriots was a team effort. It was a team effort. Pani Astrida Borowska made Maria's dresst. Lady Syele von Heidelberg made Juan's Wams and coif. Juan made the pants. Elvira Violante de Ballesteros made the red/white/blue cording. The coif slashes represent the team logo and the large “X” motif on the back of the Wams is both a play on my name, Xavier, and also makes him #10 on the team. Maria’s gown has elements drawn from a Patriots cheerleader uniform.

Her Majesty Avelina issued a garb challenge to the Kingdom for Birka to pick their favorite sports team and interpret their uniform as a medieval garment or outfit.

“So many of us are rabid sports fans and when we are playing medieval on the weekends, sometimes we can be found wearing our teams’ colors under our garb for warmth,” Queen Avelina wrote.  “I was inspired by an exchange between Duchess Kiena and Lady Rafaella and the Atlantians.  For the past couple of Coronations, the Atlantians have been issuing garb challenges.  These have included Disney Princesses, Superheros and villains.  Since the winter reign happens during football season, I decided to issue my own garb challenge.  One that would let folks wear their team’s colors in an unobtrusive manner at a medieval event.  It was so fantastic to see what people came up with and I was astounded by the talent and creativity of everyone who took part.”

The kingdom was inspired by the words of Her Majesty and responded with creativity and style.  Baronessa Maria Pagani and Baron Juan Xavier won the prize of a small wooden box crafted for the Queen by Master Estgardr (Angus Pembridge).  The following are some of the garb displayed.

King’s and Queens Arts & Science Competition 2012 – photo by Lady Ose Silverhair

The following article was written by Lady Ysemay Sterlyling as part of the Gazette’s ongoing “How to…” series.

Judging a competition can often be as difficult as entering. Yet, at a certain point in our artisan development, many of us choose to take the plunge as a judge.  However, few are ever given any guidance or training about judging.   In addition, often the guidelines and standards for judging a competition are nearly nonexistent.  As a judge, you want to do the right thing: make sure your scoring scale is on par with other judges, provide unbiased and honest critique, encourage the artisan to learn and grow, and finally help decide the winner.  Hopefully, this article will help demystify the process and help make the judging experience more pleasant (more…)
