Calligraphy and Illumination, Edward and Thyra

by Gun∂ormr Dengir and Eleanor Catlyng

As the end of the reign of our Majesties Edward and Thyra approaches, we have started work on a scroll to commemorate their reign. The pattern is that of a Mortuary Roll. These were sent upon the death of an Abbot, Prioress or other high-ranking member of a religious community to other, related houses. The roll began with an obituary for the deceased and then, upon arrival, each house added a short, usually formulaic, prayer. These begin with the place name, introduced with the word “Titulus”, and then proceed to offer a prayer for the deceased. In some cases, they then tack on the names of deceased members of their houses, with the admonition “When praying for them, please also remember ours”. The final scroll, in some cases more than 10 meters long, then returned to the original house with a complete record of its travels.

One titulus, that of Notre Dame in Watten, from the roll for Abbot Foulques of Corbie with the title line of the following one, for St. Omer. Despite Folques having died in 1095, the roll probably dates to about 1106. (BNF Latin 11636, f.208v)

Mortuary RollUsing this pattern, we are constructing a memorial roll for the soon-to-be-former King and Queen. A modified text has been written to use as a skeleton for the Tituli.   In addition to asking for prayers for the soul of the dead, we’re remembering the wisdom, deeds or fame of those who have left us for other lands or those whose deeds inspire words and songs that travel the world.

The goal is to represent as many of the Baronies, Shires and Cantons of this and even other kingdoms to with contributed Tituli, adding any members from their local community whom they wish to celebrate. Where possible we are working with resident scribes, but the fates are harsh mistresses and the end of the reign draws nigh. Therefore we’re hoping to have other local groups contribute names to be remembered, with the Titulus added by whichever scribes may dedicate themselves to this work.

As such, those who wish to contribute one for remembrance, should submit information here.

We shall arrange a scribe to record your memorial, provided that we receive your contribution by the 22nd of March.

Those who may wish to lend their hand to the project as a scribe are also welcome to submit their interest here.  One does not need to be a well practiced scribe, as those who laid letters historically also ranged in skill, but a willingness to learn the appropriate hand for this project is necessary.

coronation, Edward and Thyra

The sun shone brightly as the nobles and great officers of the Kingdom gathered yesterday for the Coronation of Their Majesties Edward and Thyra in the Barony of Bergental.  The ceremony took place in the sanctuary of the First Congregation church, which had a lovely medieval ambiance, with a vaulted ceiling and beautiful stained glass windows.

The Last Court of Their Majesties Brennan and Caoilfhionn opened with their Majesties recognizing those gentles who had staunchly supported them during their reign. A full court report will be published separately as soon as it becomes available.

Two sybils approach warn Their Majesties that their reign must end

The presentation of awards was interrupted by the approach of two Sibyls. They announced that the prophecy regarding their reign was incomplete, adding a touch of levity to the proceedings by explaining that “No, seriously, there was a piece of papyrus stuck to the back”.

Warned that dire things would befall the kingdom he loved, his Majesty agreed that they must heed the words of the Oracle and end their reign. Her Majesty dismissed her guard. Both shared moving words of their love for the people of the East, in response to which the assembled populace rose spontaneously to their feet in tribute.

Prince Edward and Princess Thyra were summoned, entering into Court in splendid gold and silver garments, escorted by their household. As they advanced down the mail aisle, twelve periaktoi (an ancient theatrical device by which a scene or change of scene was indicated)  bearers carrying the zodiacal signs made their way down the side aisles.

King Brennan passes on his crown to Prince EdwardHis Majesty removed her Majesty’s Crown, giving it into the keeping of Herald, then removed his own, and crowned Prince Edward.

Crowning ThyraKing Edward then crowned Queen Thyra.  Brennan and Caoilfhionn exited.

Sumptuous blue robes were brought forward to clothe their Majesties, and the purple drapes behind the thrones were removed to reveal a huge zodiacal mural.

As the robing proceeded, the zodiacal prophecies were read, punctuated by the periaktoi bearers proceeding up the aisles in turn, and pausing at the front as the verse corresponding to their sign was read.

Upon conclusion of the readings, two astrologers entered, one bearing a large book. Again injecting a bit of levity, the two predicted that the reign of Their Majesties would endure for four thousand, and some … hours.

astrologers address Their MajestiesThe astrologers having been dispatched, the bearers of the reliquary containing earth from the lists of the First Tournament and the ampulla containing water from the Bay of the Mistlands where the World was born, entered Court.

His Majesty swore upon the reliquary and Her Majesty swore upon the ampulla, to fulfill their duties as Monarchs of the East. The Kingdom Officers, royal champions, and landed barons and baronesses then offered fealty.

zodiacal muralTheir Majesties made the first award of their Reign, as they called Baroness Caoilfhionn and Sir Brennan into Court. Baroness Caoilfhinn was made a Lady of the Rose with full  ceremony, including speakers from all four Peerages. She and Sir Brennan were then made Count and Countess. Duke Lucan did them the honor of presenting them with the County coronets which he and Duchess Jana had worn after his first reign.

The ceremony was composed by Maistre Lucien de Pontivy and Lady Aildreda de Tamwurthe. Lovely period choral and organ music was integrated through the ceremony.

Earlier today, the following post was shared on Facebook:

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Kingdom of Meridies,

As many of you know, about a year ago there was a lawsuit settlement against the SCA. In what can only be described a triumph of unity and solidarity, the populace of the Society came together as one and sacrificed for the betterment of us all. As one of the Society’s insurance carries had denied the liability claim, the Board of Directors had to make the hard choice to require money from every branch to meet the financial obligations put before us. Even the sub-corporations which were not required to do so chipped in as a show of support and unity. Our bank accounts may have been depleted, but we as a whole became a stronger, closer community.
