Our twenty-fourth Research Paper comes to us from the members of the Accademia della Danza, chiefly of the Barony of Carolingia and the Shire of Quintavia. It has been their mission these past two years to transcribe and decode an original fifteenth-century manuscript that may be a reference book? an archive? a mystery and a riddle of the terpsichorean arts? The Gresley Dance Collection
On the 20th of October A.S. LIII, known in the common era as 2018, the radiant Queen of the East, Vienna de la Mer, travelled to the Shire of Owlsherst in order to attend Shire Wars VIII, the battle of Hastings. As Her King had great trials that required His attention, it would fall to Her alone this day to see to Their people.
Early in the morning the Queen had Her herald call for all present to gather ‘round- for there was one thing that She simply could not wait to do. At Her nod, the herald called one Kathryn Perry forward, and the Queen spoke of this woman’s phenomenal skill in making clothing and accessories of an Elizabethan type. Then She bade Her herald to call for Her Order of the Laurel and once they drew near, the Queen playfully admonished Kathryn and instructed her to think about what she’d done while she sat in vigil this day.
Once this most urgent business was completed, and the Order had whisked Kathryn away to her vigil, The Queen was free for a while to enjoy the activities the people of Her Shire had arranged for the day. There were Boat Battles on the Heavy Weapon field, list combat by dashing Rapier fighters, an Arts and Science Competition, children’s activities, a tasty day board to sample, something called Helga ball to play and one thing quite near and dear to Her Majesty’s heart – weapons to throw! In response to many requests for gender-neutral period titles, the SCA College of Arms has been conducting research and taking commentary on several proposed titles. The Society College of Arms runs on monthly cycles and letters. Each month, the College processes name and armory submissions from all of the Kingdoms. Final decisions on submissions are made at the monthly meetings of the Pelican Queen of Arms (names) and the Wreath King of Arms (armory). Pelican and Wreath then write up their decisions in a Letter of Acceptances and Return (LoAR). After review and proofreading, LoARs generally are released two months after the meeting where the decisions are made.
An “acceptance” indicates that the item(s) listed are now registered with the Society. A “return” indicates that the item is returned to the submitter for additional work. Most items are registered without comments. Sometimes, the LoAR will address specific issues about the name or armory or will praise the submitter/herald on putting together a very nice historically accurate item. The following results are from the August 2018 Wreath and Pelican meetings.

And it was foretold that the King of the East and his Majestic Queen, Wilhelm von Ostenbrucke and Vienna De La Mer would visit the shores of Their fair Barony of Ruantallan. And they came and held a Great Court, to honor citizens as They saw fit on the lovely October 6th day.
The first item in the Royal Court was to invite in the Baron and Baroness of Ruantallan, Guthfrith Yrlingson and Isobel de Mowbray, who did swear fealty to the King and Queen of the East, then sat and opened their own court at the whim of the King and Queen. And at the end of Their Court, they did honor newcomers to Their Court with a small token, to which the King and Queen also added their personal tokens to the populace. And the Baron and Baroness then did close their court and Their Royal Majesties did open the Great Court.
