Pennsic 42 Updates

May 29, 2013 by East Kingdom Gazette

pennsic fortPosted on behalf of the Pennsic 42 staff.

There are a few changes this year that are starting to be publicized:

  • The Pennsic Facebook and Twitter Feed webpages are public access from the web and information will be posted by senior staff up to and during war. Every effort will be made to ensure that what is disseminated is reflected on the Pennsic website.
  • The Barn as prior known will now be an expansion of the Camp Store with Pennsic Produce relocated there, a restaurant and a mini-Lowes Home Improvement outlet. The New Barn is located in N-01 and all Barn Activities will be held there. Pictures are posted on the
    Pennsic Facebook page.
  • Troll will be closed from Midnight until 6AM Monday through Thursday and no coins will be accepted. Please review the Pennsic Registration page for details, rules and required items for admittance. See the Pennsic Registration Office site for full details.
  • The site will close at NOON on Saturday, August 3rd. All camps must be packed out and their land clean, empty and restored. Any group that leaves a site unsatisfactory will be cited and lose seniority on their block for next year.

    Stupid Facebook. 🙁

So, I decided to learn what I could learn without using Facebook. For a lark, I went to Google Maps and typed “Pennsic War”. Not only does it direct me to Cooper’s Lake Campground (correctly), but if you click on the little flag on the map, it shows a picture of the Pennsic Fort. Very cool… And, as has long been true, if you drill down it shows the Pennsic roads with proper names. Alas: no satellite photo of the new barn (or if it is there, I could not determine where it is).

I’m considering painting a piece of canvas with “I don’t do Facebook but I do exist”, or some variant thereof and bring it to Pennsic.

Not a very medieval sentiment, but a very honorable one.

I’ve trained my wife and daughter: I’ve said “Facebook is evil” so many times, that they now start sentences with “I know Facebook is evil, but…”.

I think that Pennsic might be violating the basics of the new Social Media Policy – in the sense that they seem to me to be using Facebook as not merely their primary means of communication, but making all other forms of communication about the event second class forms of communication.

Facebook is evil. But a gonfanon that said “Another Real Person Not On Facebook” would be so cool…. Especially in Latin. Or Old French. Or Anglo-Saxon….

We’re going to try to get the information that comes out on Facebook posted at the Gazette since many people don’t follow Facebook. Hopefully that will help.
