Thanks to Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon for submitting this account of the tourney and the resulting scoring.  Master Terafan currently serves as the Society Equestrian Marshall, and offered to sponsor the Jousting Tourney.

Jousting requires a specific authorization, in addition to the basic equestrian authorization, and a higher level of armor than most equestrian activities. It’s uncommon to find enough riders who have both the authorization and the equipment for a competition, except at major events such as the East Kingdom 50 Year Celebration or Inter-Kingdom wars.

The noble jousting tournament consisted of 3 different competitions, each scored independently and intended to help bring some pomp and circumstance into equestrian activities.

  • First, a “helmschau” to display (a minimum of) the rider’s helm, helm crest, and their banner.
  • Second, a heraldic presentation of the rider into the arena
  • Third, the actual joust

The helmschau and heraldic presentation were judged by the king-at-arms, Duke Brion Tarragon, and by three noble ladies, Duchess Anna Tarragon, Duchess Katherine Stanhope and Countess Mathilde de Cadene.

The Helmschau was worth 5 points:

  • Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon: 4 pts
  • Mistress Eleanor Fitzpatrick: 5 pts
  • The learned Ken Mondschein, a visitor to these lands: 2 pts

The Heraldic Presentation was worth 5 points:

  • Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon: 4 pts
  • Mistress Eleanor Fitzpatrick: 5 pts
  • The learned Ken Mondschein, a visitor to these lands: 2 pts

The Joust was intended to have 27 points possible (3 opponents, 3 passes each), but only wound up with 18 points possible (because each person only had 2 opponents as the tournament was called due to the heat, and because of a mishap).

  • Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon: 18 pts
  • Mistress Eleanor Fitzpatrick: 9 pts
  • The learned Ken Mondschein, a visitor to these lands: 1 pt

The outcome of the overall tournament was

  • 1st: Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon – 26 pts
  • 2nd: Mistress Eleanor Fitzpatrick – 19 pts
  • 3rd: The learned Ken Mondschein, a visitor to these lands – 5 pts

One additional competitor was disqualified from the tournament altogether (and their scores in the previous phases omitted) after striking their opponent’s horse with their lance during the joust.

A major element that we preach with both foam lance jousting and wooden lance jousting is that we cannot tolerate having a horse get struck.  The disqualified competitor must go back and train a lot more with lance and quintain, and must demonstrate good lance control and follow-through, before they will be allowed to attempt another authorization.

Are you going to the East Kingdom 50 Year Celebration?

Would you like to do your bit to help the event, but don’t have a lot of time to commit?  If that sounds like you, then Gate is the perfect place for you to help out.  Shifts are an hour long (although you can certainly volunteer for more than one in a row, if you have the time to spare).

Gate volunteers get shade, and a chance to be the first welcoming face people see as they arrive at the event. What could be better?

Wondering if you are qualified? Volunteers must be 18 to handle money and check identification, but there are plenty of other tasks that younger volunteers can help with too.   Need to sit, or hate to sit? Either way, Gate can find a place for you to help.

Alors que nous célèbrerons tout ce qui est grandiose au sujet du Royaume lors des célébrations du cinquantième anniversaire du royaume de l’Est, les organisateurs souhaitent garder mémoire de ceux qui sont passés avant nous et honorer ceux qui nous ont quittés. Dès lors, un jardin commémoratif sera réservé à ceux qui veulent un moment d’introspection, question de se remémorer, de s’assoir tranquille puis contempler ces résidents de l’Est qui ont battis, nous ont fait grandir et dont les identités persisteront dans les annales comme les piliers du Rêve que nous cherchons à préserver.

Cet espace sera adjacent au Village (Town Center) et sera décoré de photographies de ces amis qui nous ont quittés. Si vous avez le désir de participer au projet, consultez les informations ci-bas. Nous vous prions d’utiliser le jardin dans le respect et la contemplation. Notre espoir est que vous y mènerez vos familles afin d’y vivre et partager la riche histoire qui entoure le royaume. Toutefois, nous devons insister que les jeunes enfants n’y soient pas laissés seuls.

To Absent Friends

As we celebrate and revel in the best of the East Kingdom at the 50 Year Celebration, the staff wishes to remember those who have come before us and honor those who have gone on. There will be a Memorial Garden that will serve as a contemplative space for all those who wish a time to come and remember, sit quietly, and view some of those Easterners who have built us up, made us better, and whose names and faces will live on in the East as the pillars of the dream that we strive to create.

This space will be adjacent to the Town Center and will feature pictures of our absent friends. If you wish to contribute to the project, please see the information below. Please use the Memorial Garden contemplatively and respectfully. We hope you will bring your families to share the rich history that the East has woven, but we also request that there be no unaccompanied children in the garden.

The staff would ask that if you have pictures of those who have come before, that you please send them to Mistress Lucie, erin . neuhardt (at) gmail (dot) com. All pictures should be received no later than Monday, June 25th. Please put EK 50 Year or Memorial Garden in the subject.
