For the East Kingdom 50th Year event, Duchess Avelina wanted a Town Center where people could gather. The concept was a success despite the oppressive heat, and we want to encourage autocrats to try variations of it at their own events. This is a summary of what we learned creating the Town Center. EK 50 Year was a large camping event, but the ideas are adaptable to any event that has space.
Let all who dwell in The Known Worlde who would do honour to the memory of Countess Adrienne of Toledo, First Queen of the East, be advised that there will be at 6 PM on this coming Sunday the 16th of August a Service for that purpose at Greyhaven, 90 El Camino Real in Berkeley, California. Please RSVP and/or send reminiscences to Countess Diana Listmaker (email@example.com).
Greetings to the Populace of the East, from Leonete D’Angely, East Kingdom Chancellor Minor.
Throughout the day at Birka, I was pleased to see families of all ages and types enjoying all that the SCA has to offer, from youth combat to shopping as a family, from attending family specific classes or relaxing in the Family Lounge to participating in the dancing and fashion shows. The youth of the East attended Marshalls meetings and taught classes alongside the adults, and ferociously guarded both the Royal Room and Her Majesty Thyra, protecting her from dangers big and small. There was some mention of some very dangerous pineapple candies. This event showed just how much we truly are a family friendly society dedicated to providing a safe and enriching environment for those of all ages.
Unfortunately, an incident occurred in the hallway outside of court that must be addressed. An adult grabbed a child by the arms, shook him, and yelled at him for being loud and running around while court occurred. This was witnessed by multiple adults, including the closely supervising parents. Unless you are saving the child from imminent harm (such as a child bolting onto a list field,) do not touch a child withot permission of the child’s parent. If a child is disturbing an event, politely asking them to quiet down, or asking them where their adult is and politely addressing the issue with the adult would be the appropriate actions to take. If that action does not lead to a solution, the next step would be to speak to the event steward, local, or kingdom seneschal for them to intervene. No one deserves to feel unsafe at an event, no matter what age they are. If you have any questions or concerns about this or any other matter involving youths and families in the East, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Addendum from the Kingdom Seneschal
People should remember that touching anyone without their consent (except where safety is concerned) is considered Simple Assault in most US jurisdictions even if it does no physical harm. Touching anyone in an inappropriate manner can lead to expulsion from an event and possibly arrest. Touching in an aggressive and intentionally harmful way, such as grabbing or shaking, is contrary to the SCA’s goal of a chivalrous and honorable Society and will not be tolerated at events.

Folks interested in aiding Master Feral von Halstern with his recovery can check out this t-shirt project fronted by Lady Anna Dokeianina Syrakousina. “Delicate Flowers of the Northern Army” is a colloquial term used for the ladies of the North, and these shirts started as nothing more but a funny Facebook cover photo in preparation for Pennsic. After interest was drummed up incredibly fast, Anna took the design to Spreadshirt, an online interface used to produce print-on-demand clothing. The account is set up to collect a small markup commission on each item, which will be sent to a Paypal account quarterly. The funds will then be forwarded to Feral. The shirts read, “I am a Blue Tyger-blooded CENSORED Green Dragon-slaying delicate CENSORED flower of the CENSORED Northern Army, and you CENSORED will treat me like a CENSORED lady.” The profane joke has unknown origins, but has been around for a while. Shirts are available in unisex and girly cut styles. “Delicate Flower” t-shirts are available at Spreadshirt. General Northern Army t-shirts are also available at Northernarmy.org, and the proceeds from them will also benefit Feral’s recovery.
The primary duty of the office of the Chatelaine is to be the first point of contact to those new to the SCA, or new to the local area. The Chatelaine is expected to read and uphold the governing documents of the Society, the Kingdom, and the local group(s).
As an initial point of contact for those new to the SCA, the Chatelaine is the individual that will get newcomers “fitted” for their first event, and would be responsible for maintaining a Gold Key of garments, as well as dishes, or at the very least cups, for new contacts to use at their first event(s). Maintaining a Gold Key does not mean the Chatelaine is responsible for making all the clothes and donating all the dishes, although they should make sure the items are in good repair and ask for donations or assistance when needed. The Chatelaine is also responsible for making sure that this Gold Key makes it to local events.
The Chatelaine is also expected to know things… lots of things. That does not mean your Chatelaine will know everything, but a good Chatelaine will know where to find information. For instance, if someone wants to learn to cook 14th century food, the Chatelaine should either be able to point that person at someone relatively nearby who can either teach them or who will know someone who can teach them (like a cooking guild).
In this vein, the Chatelaine must keep an open relationship with their local officers. The other local officers will be invaluable help in providing directions and information. When Sally comes to her first event and starts hearing all these crazy names, she is going to want an introduction right away to the Herald that will help guide her into her new life. Same goes for Samantha that is going to need to meet quickly the Knight Marshal who can give her all of the information she needs about the next fight practice.
One of the most important things a person can do as Chatelaine in the East (and this is relevant to any group, really) is to know the Kingdom: the borders, the area oddities, the law of the land, that sort of thing. Certainly the Chatelaine isn’t required to know every single group and name them off by heart, but it is important to have a good idea of the states/territories the Kingdom includes. The East Kingdom begins with the State of Delaware in the South, then expands upward in a sort of a funnel shape into the eastern half of Pennsylvania and New York, includes all of New Jersey and other states north and east of that, and up in to Canada, where we get the honor of claiming those areas to the north of our most North and Eastern states.
The Chatelaine, being the first person that many people in the SCA meet, also has a duty to recruit new members, as well as try to retain both old and new members. It can be exceedingly discouraging for people to hang around feeling like they don’t fit in or they haven’t quite found their niche. It is imperative that the Chatelaine be at the very least a welcoming and warm person who always to try to keep people engaged. New recruits don’t always jump in quickly, so it’s important for a Chatelaine to always keep a lure out. Retaining people can involve making people feel like they, their help, and their opinions are wanted and needed – because they are. Chatelaine can be a very tiring, but very rewarding, job.

** This is the first in a series of articles about the different jobs commonly seen but not always commonly understood in the SCA.
As many may have already heard, tragedy struck several of our own on New Year’s Day when a fire destroyed the home of Master Tearlach the Profane and his family. Everyone escaped the blaze safely, but the house, and everything in it, was lost.
If you do not know Master Tearlach personally, you have likely seen his helmets on the field. His skill with a hammer and anvil is renowned across the Known World, and many of the East’s best and brightest (as well as a whole lot of Northern Army Thugs) are proud to wear his handiwork.
As is typical in the SCA when disaster strikes, there are many who have stepped up to help and many more who have asked what they, too can do.
The East Kingdom University (EKU) is looking for someone to work with the university and the kingdom webminister’s office on a special project. We are looking for someone who is familliar with MySQL and PHP to create forms and reports for a database that the EKU is looking to build. If you are willing to give some of your time, or if you have more questions about the project, please send me an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org

As the topic of the language change around the Inspirational Equality debate heats up around the East Kingdom, I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who has responded here and on Facebook and commend the civility and courtesy with which you have replied. I expect nothing else of our readership, but when an issue is contentious, it sometimes takes restraint to be able to maintain a conversational tone. You have done that and this reporter, Countess Marguerite, thanks you.
Additionally, the board has clarified with the East Kingdom Gazette that they are maintaining 2 sets of comment periods for the 2 language changes.
The original comment period for the sentence: “Each competitor in a Royal List must be fighting for a prospective consort of the opposite sex unless the Crown has elected to permit a competitor to fight for a prospective consort of the same sex.” will end on December 1st, 2012. Comments on this replacement wording can be sent to the BoD in an email to email@example.com with “Same-Gender Consort Proposal” in the subject line.
A decision about whether section IV, B. of Corpora will be changed to contain this language will be made after the end of the comment period.
The new sentence: “No one may take part in the list as both competitor and also consort“, has a different comment period. Per Lisa May, Countess Margaret Ni Conner, it will last for at least 60 days after the Board Meeting. Again, comments can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org. It is suggested you use a different subject line in the email to clarify that you are talking about sentence two. A common sense suggestion is to use the subject line “Same-Gender Consort Proposal: Additional Wording”.
Regardless of your position, it is important that you make it known to the BoD by contacting them directly, and we appreciate your continuing to maintain the thoughtful, courteous tone of the debate we have had so far in your missives.
Thank you for helping to shape our society.
We’re delighted to announce that the redesigned, revitalized East Kingdom College of Performers (formerly known as the EK Bardic College) will be officially launched at the Coronation of Edward and Thyra next week in Concordia of the Snows. The East Kingdom College of Performers is a guild of entertainers of all kinds: musicmakers, poets, storytellers, comedians, mummers, puppeteers, etc., etc., etc. This community is dedicated to supporting the pursuit of the performing arts both as practiced in period and as relevant to SCAdian history and culture, to teaching and coaching, to making connections among performers throughout the kingdom, and to developing opportunities for collaboration, socialization, multidisciplinary projects, performance spaces, inspirational challenges, and anything else we can think of to entertain ourselves and our audiences!
*All* performers, from the newest to the most seasoned, are warmly invited to join the College roster. To sign up, please send a message to Sabine de Kerbriant (just for now; the College website is coming very soon!) with your name and home group — feel free to add your interests and experience level if you’d like. If you’re interested in teaching/coaching or have performance venues available, or are looking for either, please mention that too!
