This weekend the traditional Bear Pit tourneys were held at Market Day at Birka. The format is a 10 foot by 10 foot list. Combatants can be killed according to the usual rules of combat or by being driven out of bounds of the list with both feet.  A single foot out of bounds results in a wound. The victor remains in the list to take on the next comer, retaining any wounds they may have received.

The scoring awards 2 points for a win, 1 point for a loss, and 1 point each for a double-kill.

Results are courtesy of Northernarmy.org

The scores for all participating fighters in both the heavy list and fencing tourneys can be viewed there.

First place in the heavy list tourney went to Douglas Henry, followed by Arne Ulrichsson and Matthew Moravaeous. All three are members of the Order of the Chivalry.

The overall statistics on the tourney are:

Total number of fighters 137
Total number of fights 3039
Total Duration 3 hours
Number of fights per minute 16.88
Number of fights per second 0.28

The Fencing Tournament was won by Tora Taka, followed by Gabriel Roberts and Cassius Pontianus.

The overall statistics are:

Total number of fighters 94
Total number of fights 1770
Total Duration 3 hours
Number of fights per minute 9.83
Number of fights per second 0.16

The amazing number of fights packed into three hours is a result of the Minister of the Lists having access to a sophisticated scoring database, and entry to a crew of dedicated volunteers, enabling the losing combatant to report their loss, and their victorious opponent’s win, and get back into line to fight again in under a minute.

For the Youth Combat Tourney, Diana the Mighty won Division I and Leon Griffin won Division III.   Xavier, also from Division III, won most chivalrous of the list.

Update: Due to tremendous generosity, the Teen Party has received more than enough monetary donations! Physical donations are still welcomed, and those interested in chaperoning the party can contact Mistress Leonete.

Greetings!

The traditional East Kingdom Teen Party is on Sunday night of war week. It is open to all teens from the known world. This is the longest running activity for teens at Pennsic.

To that end we are looking for donations of non-perishable snacks and beverages or monetary donations to help defray the cost of supporting the youth of our kingdom and society as we give them a space to make new acquaintances and have a social of their own to hang out with old friends.

Lady Aethelthryth and Lord Sven are this year’s hosts and are being assisted by Mistress Leonete and myself. Please consider a donation to the enjoyment of our youth as they are indeed the future of our society and more importantly members also.

Nonperishable donations of single serving drinks, chips, and other snacks may be dropped off at EK Royal in the bin labeled for  Teen Party donations. Monetary donations may be made by paypal at Inosenchuk@gmail.com. Make sure to choose friends and family, and label it as a donation for the teen party.

badge Chancellor MinorChancellor Minors help integrate families and children into the events and activities throughout the East Kingdom in a meaningful way. Chancellor Minors do the very important job of fostering a healthy and vibrant youth culture within the Society. The SCA is a family-friendly and family inclusive organization. Chancellor Minors and Youth Officers at Large help make that possible by creating a family friendly atmosphere and providing a wide gamut of youth-specific activities at official SCA events.

Chancellor Minors work closely with their local Chatelaines to ensure that new families feel welcome and are able to participate in a meaningful way.  Chancellor Minors and Youth Officers at Large also work closely with event autocrats to integrate games, classes, and other youth-specific activities for youths attending events.

Chancellor Minor Application Deadline Extended

01 Friday Sep 2017

≈ Comments Off on Chancellor Minor Application Deadline Extended

Greetings to the Populace of the East Kingdom,

While I have loved serving the youth and families of the East these past four years, my time as Chancellor Minor is coming to the end, and I am still seeking a successor. The deadline for application for the position has been extended to September 15th.

What does the Chancellor Minor do, you ask? Well, according to Kingdom Law:

10. The Kingdom Chancellor Minor:
a. Assists parents of children in integrating children’s activities into local and Kingdom events. The Kingdom Chancellor Minor will not be responsible for, nor in any way encourage autocrats or the Society to provide, baby-sitting services.
b. Prepares, maintains, and disseminates such materials as further the objectives of the Office.
c. Works with the Kingdom Chatelaine in accomplishing these goals.
d. Encourages youth in the culture and customs of the Society.
e. Works with the Kingdom Youth Earl Marshal and the Kingdom Youth Rapier Marshal to coordinate youth martial activities.

In addition, with the help of a deputy, the Youth Clerk, the Chancellor Minor is responsible for making sure that all those who work with youth are properly warranted and background checked through society.

The candidate for this job should be someone who:
– Enjoys working with both children and adults
– Communicates well via email and in person
– Has basic spreadsheet and document skills
– Has or is eligible for an SCA background check
– Has approximately 2 hours per week to dedicate to reaching out to seneschals, deputies, and youth officers about activities, initiatives, and answering any questions.
– Can fulfill the duties of kingdom officers laid out in EK Law section E.

In order to apply, candidates are asked to submit a letter of intent to myself, the Prince and Princess, and the East Kingdom Seneschal. Ideally, an SCA resume and and modern resume would be included. Any questions can be directed to me at chancellor-minor@eastkingdom.org.

Yours in Service,
Mistress Leonete D’Angely

A guide from Mistress Leonete D’Angely, East Kingdom Chancellor Minor and Pennsic Youth University Coordinator

What Can I Do At Pennsic?

So you are in the 11-17 age range, and you are going to Pennsic. Maybe you are super excited.  Maybe you are going because Mom and Dad said so. Maybe you wait all year to be able to fight twice a day.  Maybe you aren’t so sure there is anything that interests you in this SCA thing. Either way, there is so much for your age group to do at Pennsic. This is a basic overview of some of the options. There is no way I could fit all of the activities into one article, so please check the Pennsic University Schedule and your site book for more ideas and options. Continue reading →

Family Activities at Wars of the Roses – Something New!

21 Sunday May 2017

≈ Comments Off on Family Activities at Wars of the Roses – Something New!

Olivia Baker, reporting

This year at Wars of the Roses, we are doing something a little different. Rather than having specific family activities, we are encouraging and facilitating participation in all of the aspects of the event (to the extent legally and safely possible). Too much have we heard about families who cannot participate in “main” event activities and teens who are bored with crafts. There is always something to learn or help with, and it is our goal this year to provide as many opportunities for youth and their families to enjoy the event together as possible.

(1) There is always something to help with. We will provide a list of many of the activities happening at the event and things they will need volunteers for. Appropriate age ranges will be included so youth can easily find opportunities to help with the “main” Event.

(2) There is always something to learn. There will be many classes, and we will have a Village building full of artisans (and free play space) willing to share their craft and let anyone who is interested try it out. We are working with those who submit classes to have them post age ranges for their classes, and we encourage teachers to consider teaching beginner-level classes that would be appropriate for younger children as well. We are also looking for youth who would like to sponsor a competition at the Event.

(3) There is always someplace to be part of. The Village building will be a family-friendly space with free-play areas, artisan stations, and social space. It is a place where families can come to socialize, work on arts/sciences/handwork/etc, and play while enjoying “what we do in the SCA.” This is not the only place where families and youth are encouraged to participate. It is a sheltered area with boundaries that is explicitly family-friendly. Our goal is to keep families involved with the activities of the Event rather than sending them to a separated space.

We hope to see many families with all members engaged and enjoying the Event. If you have questions or suggestions, or you would like to volunteer to assist or teach, please contact me as soon as you can so we can talk!

If you’re interested in helping out with Family Activities, please contact the Family Activities Coordinator directly.

Please remember that parents are responsible for their children at all times. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the East Kingdom Chancellor Minor Policies.

Below is the current schedule of family-friendly activities!

The Office of the Chancellor Minor (Youth Activities) is seeking a new Youth Clerk. This deputy position is described below.

The East Kingdom Youth Clerk helps handle the modern administrative burden of managing the Kingdom’s extensive youth officer background checks. Background checks are required for adults involved with the supervision of a youth activity: Chancellor Minor of an SCA group, youth officer at large, Youth Combat Marshal, Youth Rapier Marshal etc.

The duties of the Youth Clerk are to:
– Serve as the primary contact for all East Kingdom background check submissions, processing, and tracking.
– Maintain the membership rosters for all Kingdom youth programs (Chancellors Minor, Youth Combat and Youth Rapier).

The Youth Clerk does not make warranting, training, or program decisions other than to advise rostered individuals and program coordinators of warrant status. Individual youth programs remain under the full control of the various Kingdom officers entrusted with those programs. The Youth Clerk IS responsible for collecting and storing individual personal information in support of that mission.

The Youth Clerk is a deputy to the Kingdom Chancellor Minor with additional supervision and oversight from the Kingdom Youth Combat and Youth Rapier Marshals.

Qualifications:

  • Access to a secure home computer and telephone (landline or cell phone).
    Basic computer and internet literacy.
  • Basic proficiency in the use of e-mail, Google drive, Excel, Google sheets, MS Word.
  • Task and deadline oriented.
  • Able to pass the standard SCA background check to work with youth – Pennsylvania residents must also pass their state’s background check requirements.
  • Familiarity with the offices of Chancellor Minor, Youth Combat and Youth Rapier is a huge plus.

Please contact Mistress Leonete at chancellor-minor@eastkingdom.org if you are interested in the position, or if you would like more information.
