SCA Memorial Tournament Raises Nearly $7000 for Charity
SCA Giving Back – It is said that in tough times, we measure a community by how it cares for the most vulnerable. For more than 16 years, the Kingdom of Meridies (Alabama, almost all of Georgia, a bit of the Florida panhandle, most of Tennessee, and parts of southern Kentucky) has been doing just that.
Each year, the Kingdom hosts the Meridian Grand Tournament. It is a day of pageantry, chivalry and noble fellowship. Friends and families come together to showcase the best of what they can be. Five Tournaments are held and the top two combatants in each tournament advance to the Grand Tournament. They are joined by champions nominated by the peerage orders and populace
One of these tournaments is the Count Francois Duvaunt Memorial Tournament. The tournament is sponsored by the Order of the Chalice who use it to raise funds for local womens’ shelters. The Tournament winner chooses the receiving shelter each year. Entrants donate $20 to participate and the Order hosts a fundraiser luncheon as well.
Despite all the challenges people are facing in 2021, the generosity of the Kingdom continues to impress. Attendees donated a record breaking $6,600 this year, bringing the total donations to nearly $50,000 since it began.
This tradition highlights that each of us has an opportunity to be knightly, aiding those less fortunate than ourselves. Huzzah!
