From the Tyger Clerk of the Signet’s office:

If you are dropping off a scroll for Birka, please note:

Her Majesty has requested that all Birka scrolls be delivered before noon on Saturday so she has time to sign them.

Scrolls can be dropped off at Herald’s point (in Webster, across the hall from Troll) from 6 pm – 8 pm on Friday.

Scrolls can also be dropped off at the Royal Room (in Coolidge, on the Mezzanine) on Saturday morning.

Greetings, Good People of the East!

Have you been Campaigning with Her Royal Majesty as She tours Her Kingdom? If so, don’t forget to pick up your sticker if you attend Birka this weekend!

Stickers will be available on Friday evening (by 7:30pm) and Saturday. They will be located on a small folding table in the same area as Gate, so you can snag one right when you arrive.

If you haven’t yet picked up a booklet, you still have time! There are still five Royal Progress events in the East after Birka, and that’s enough to earn you a token.

A few last-minute reminders from your friendly neighborhood Gold Key!

Gold Key hours:
Friday 8-10PM
Saturday 9AM-10PM,
Sunday open for returns only 9AM-3PM

– Gold Key can no longer set aside three different outfits for you to wear each day, please only leave with one outfit per person at a time.
– Gold Key is not the coat-check! I’m sorry but I need that space on the rack for people’s mundane clothes, and we do not want the mundanes rack to collapse under it’s own weight again.
– Please remember to bring something to leave as ransom for the garb you are being loaned. If you need a place to store your mundane clothing while you re wearing Gold Key, this is ideal. If you are wearing your garb over your modern clothes, please leave a jacket or something similar.

– Please do not ask Gold Key to watch over your purchases/armour/weapons/children/anything that isn’t your mundane clothing while you go back into the merchant hall to buy more stuff; as much as I want to be helpful I cannot guarantee their safety while I am helping other people.
– Gold Key is not the changing rooms! We do have changing rooms set up but there are other changing rooms for people who have their own garb, which quite frankly, are not curtains so you will probably feel more secure changing there in any case.
– Gold Key is open for returns during breakdown, we cannot loan you garb while we are packing it away.

SCA DISCUSSION SALON & OPEN FORUM

Discussion Salon: Friday, January 24th, 8:00 PM in the Ballroom (Proposed time 1 hr but may run over)

What is a Discussion Salon?

A discussion salon is a gathering of people who will be engaged in listening to each other, and talking calmly and rationally about an SCA topic that is likely to stir controversy or at least deep thought. Traditionally, salons are incubators where ideas are conceived, gestated, and hatched. Salons have been the frontiers of social and cultural change both in and out of period.

Salon Topic for Birka: What impact is Facebook having on the East Kingdom? What impact is it having on the SCA? Are these impacts ones that we want it to have? What can we do, as a community, to mitigate its negative effects?

So that everyone can feel free to participate this will be an OP Free gathering. Leave your regalia at the door. A 6 month newbie has as much of a voice in this discussion as a Duke.

Open Forum: 9:00 PM in the Ballroom

As in previous years, Birka staff is opening a space to talk about whatever SCA participants need to talk about. The decision on topic will likely be made at the last minute, based on current (SCA) events. If no pressing topic presents itself, then the previous hour’s discussion salon may spill into this time period.

If you are bringing your Tween and/or Teen to Birka, we have a new dedicated space just for them!

In the common area past Pierce (down the hall from Gate), there will be a roped off section for them to gather, and it will include either a charging station or enough strips to let them charge their devices.

As the sign for the area says, younger children, adults and parents are encouraged to find other spaces – which could be right outside their area. But this is for them to have some space to gather and be with one another.

I hope they enjoy the space!

f you have been making Largess for Her Majesty, I am very happy to accept it at Birka. For the most part I will be in the A&S Display room on Saturday. If I am not there, one of the volunteers can accept it for me. I will have a box set up specifically for this.

Also – if you have any scroll cases to return to kingdom, I will have a box for those in the A&S display room, as well, and will be passing them on to our Tyger Signet.

Information about EK MoAS Roundtable and Consultations at Birka

Greetings Kingdom!

Saturday from 1-2 in the Dartmoth room the Minister of Arts and Sciences office will be running a round table on “Consent in A&S: Giving and Receiving Feedback” led by Mistress Elena Jeanne Clifton.

Also – while we will not be having a formal consultation table, I will be available throughout the day on Saturday to talk about A&S with anyone and everyone who has questions, comments, would like feedback, etc.

Feel free to stop me during the day if you see me!

A message from the East Kingdom Earl Marshal, Duke Sir Vissevald Selkirksson:

With Cedric’s permission, I’m going to be turning the armored combat marshalate meeting at 16:00 (4:00 pm) on Saturday into a general marshalate meeting. There are two items I have to discuss there: my Curia proposal to eliminate the position of the martial Lesser Officers, and what we have to do about warranting marshals to be in compliance with Society-level requirements.

After that, I’ll open up the floor to any other concerns people wish to discuss.

The meeting is open to anyone who wishes to attend.

If an individual cannot attend please see the Granite Pursuivant, Edgitha Hlammandi, to arrange recompense in the forms of either fines, pillory, rescheduling to a mutually agreed upon time, tickling, or indenture.
