The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is seeking applications for the position of Society Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Officer. This essential role supports the SCA’s ongoing commitment to fostering a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all participants.
The Society DEIB Officer will play a key role in providing consistency, guidance, and strategic support across the Known World. A major focus of this position is working closely with Kingdom DEIB officers—offering resources, mentorship, and a unified framework to help ensure that equity and inclusion efforts are sustainable and aligned throughout the Society. The successful candidate will be a collaborator and communicator, capable of supporting local efforts while advancing Society-wide goals.
Position Title: Society Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Officer
Location: Remote / Across All SCA Kingdoms
Time Commitment: Approx. 10 -15 hours/week (variable)
Reports To: SCA, Inc. Board of Directors
Position Overview:
The Society Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Officer is a key volunteer leadership role within the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. (SCA), a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to researching and recreating the arts and cultures of pre-17th-century history. This officer is responsible for promoting a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment for all participants across the Known World. Working closely with the Board of Directors and the Office of Inclusive Programming as well as other society-level officers, the Society DEIB Officer provides guidance, resources, and support to Kingdoms and local groups in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging throughout the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Policy Support
- Maintain and support a DEIB practice framework aligned with the SCA’s mission and values
- Recommend best practices and policy improvements to support equity and access
- Collaborate with Society-level officers (e.g., Seneschals, Chroniclers, Chatelaines) to ensure inclusive practices across disciplines
Education, Outreach & Community Engagement
- Create educational materials and workshops to support DEIB awareness and cultural sensitivity
- Support Kingdom DEIB officers or liaisons, and encourage the development of these roles where they do not exist
- Serve as a point of contact for members with concerns related to inclusion, discrimination, or barriers to participation
- Foster conversations and initiatives around accessibility, cultural representation, and respectful historical reenactment
Monitoring & Reporting
- Work with the Society Seneschal to monitor DEIB-related concerns and patterns within the society and report findings to the Officer of Inclusive Programs, President, and Board of Directors.
- Provide regular updates on DEIB initiatives and progress
- Assist in developing metrics and tools to assess organizational inclusivity at the Kingdom level
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion work, particularly in nonprofit or volunteer-driven organizations
- Strong communication and facilitation skills, especially across diverse populations
- Ability to navigate sensitive topics with professionalism, empathy, and discretion
- Familiarity with the SCA’s structure, history, and culture is strongly preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to creating inclusive environments in historical reenactment, education, or similar spaces
