In Memoriam: Katherine Jade of Bayley
The Gazette apologizes for the late notice of this memorial service.
The Shire of Blak Rose is saddened to report the death of Baroness Katherine Jade of Bayley aka
Baroness Jade of Bailey (mundanely, Janet Bailey.) She died on December 5 of a combination of Covid,
pneumonia, sepsis, and kidney failure, and it took all four of them to get her.
Jade joined the Society in the early 1980s just to see what sort of odd folk her daughter, Mary, was
hanging out with. She must have liked what she saw for she was soon Seneschal of the Shire of Blak
Rose, and she received a Grant of Arms and was made a Court Baroness in 1986. She was a ball of
energy, always ready for whatever needed doing and a good friend for those lucky enough to know her.
She was active in both the western region of the Kingdom of the East, as well as the then Principality of
AEthelmearc, becoming a Companion of the Orders of the Silver Crescent and the Maunche (East) and
the Keystone and Sycamore (AEthelmearc). She became a member of the Companions of the Order of
the Pelican in 2003. On the side, she and her family ran a thriving fabric business at Pensic and by mail.
She had been sidelined by illness in recent years, but she still managed to attend the occasional local
event.
She is survived by her husband, Allen Bailey; her children, Mary, Melinda, and Michael; and several
grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on December 30, details to follow. Baroness Jade,
unfortunately, died without life insurance, and a GoFundMe account has been established to pay for the
final costs. All contributions are welcome at GoFundMe.com/f/janet-bailey .
