The rules and format for today’s tourney are as follows.
General Conventions
The tournament will begin with round-robin pools, from which sixteen combatants will advance to a double-elimination round.
- This tournament is heavy rapier default. Light rapier may not be used.
- C&T or spears may be used by agreement of the combatants, with notice given to the marshal. A combatant may decline a bout with spear or C&T without penalty.
- All double kills are to be refought.
- Barring safety issues, there will be no recentering. No hold will be called only because a combatant is nearing a list boundary. If a combatant crosses a boundary (or becomes fouled in a list rope), a hold will be called, the combatant will be moved to the inside edge of the boundary, and the bout will continue. Repeatedly going out-of-bounds during a bout will result in penalties up to and including forfeiture of that bout. In a best-two-of-three match, a forfeiture will be counted as one loss for the combatant.
- Reduced armor is allowed in the tournament.
Round Robin Pools
The number of pools, and number of combatants advancing from each pool, will be determined on the day of the tournament, based on the total number of combatants participating.
- Combatants may use any weapons form.
- Matches may be single bouts, or best of three. This will be determined on the day of the tournament, based on the total number of combatants participating.
- In the event of a tie between two combatants, victory goes to the combatant who won when the same pair fought in the pool bout. If this method cannot be used to break a tie, a fight-off may be required at the marshal-in-charge’s discretion, to determine which combatant advances.
Double Elimination Round
- Each match will be determined by the best of three bouts.
- Combatants must begin using single rapier only in all bouts. After losing one match, a combatant is free to use any weapons form.
- At the semi-final round (final four) all losses are forgiven. Each match will be determined by a single set of three bouts.
Finals
- The final match will be the best three of five bouts, with rotating non-repeating call and response weapons forms: A coin toss will determine which fencer calls their form for the initial bout first.
- Forms that can be chosen by combatants consist of Single Sword, Sword and Dagger, Case, Sword and Rigid Parry, Sword and Non-Rigid Parry, Two-handed Sword (with no secondary), and Spear (with no secondary).
- Forms need not match.
- Double kills are refought
