On Saturday, October 6th, Alan Gravesend, Society Marshal, announced that Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon, Society Equestrian Marshal, died while riding during an equestrian game at an SCA event in the Midrealm.

Master Terafan was well known throughout the Society not only as a skilled rider and excellent teacher of medieval horsemanship, but also for his contributions to the recreation of medieval life through his work documenting and constructing medieval furniture and tents, his interest in medieval cooking, and particularly his research into brewing and his involvement with the Inter Kingdom Brewers Guild. His website, greydragon.org, is a well known resource where he and his household shared his knowledge freely with all who had interest.

Master Terafan had been active in the SCA for more than 30 years. He was awarded Arms by Eastern Monarchs Gavin II and Sedalia II in AS 22, when Atlantia was still part of the East. He was made a Baron of the Court in Atlantia in AS 28, and was created a Master of the Laurel by the Crown of Atlantia in AS 31. In addition, Atlantia had recognized him with the Companion of the Pearl (for excellence in Arts & Sciences), and of the Golden Dolphin (for service and leadership), and he held the King’s Award of Excellence and the Queen’s Order of Courtesy from the Atlantian crown. He was also the premier of Atlantia’s Order of the Golden Lance (a grant-level award for exceptional expertise in the equestrian arts), and was a Companion of the Nonpareil, which is awarded by the Crown of Atlantia for “those who have shown excellence, honor, courtesy or chivalry above and beyond any duty. The members of this Order exemplify what it means to be an Atlantian.” Continue reading →

On Saturday, October 6, a brother in arms to many of us lost his life in the pursuit of our game. The Society’s Equestrian Marshal, Master Terafan Greydragon, died while competing in an equestrian game at an SCA event in Kentucky. The Society is investigating the matter and is fully cooperating with the authorities. The Society Marshal is conducting an investigation to determine what might have led up to the accident, and what specific measures should be taken to ensure that this does not occur again. Upon the completion of our investigation, the SCA will make the results available to the public. We have reached out to Terafan’s family to express our support for them at this moment of loss. We ask that Terafan and his family be held in your hearts.

The Society Marshal also issued the following directive to all Equestrian Marshals throughout the Society:

Effective immediately and until further notice from the Society Marshal, the activity known to the Equestrian community as pig-sticking (or variants such as “tent-pegging”) is not allowed in any form at any SCA activity, event or practice.

This stand down is intended to give the marshallate time to study the incident that occurred on October 6th, and review how the SCA should proceed with this activity in the future. This stand down includes any form of pig-sticking, either as a standalone activity or an activity in combination with others.  This applies to the activity regardless of the type of lance, spear or other simulator used.

Also effective immediately, Mistress Arabella Di Siena (Melissa Midzor) is the Acting Society Equestrian Marshal.

EK 50 Year, equestrian

Thanks to Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon for submitting this account of the tourney and the resulting scoring.  Master Terafan currently serves as the Society Equestrian Marshall, and offered to sponsor the Jousting Tourney.

Jousting requires a specific authorization, in addition to the basic equestrian authorization, and a higher level of armor than most equestrian activities. It’s uncommon to find enough riders who have both the authorization and the equipment for a competition, except at major events such as the East Kingdom 50 Year Celebration or Inter-Kingdom wars.

Thanks also to Mistress Tannis of Tirydon of Atlantia for her kind permission to use her photos.

Hear now the words of Master Terafan:

The noble jousting tournament consisted of 3 different competitions, each scored independently and intended to help bring some pomp and circumstance into equestrian activities.

Mistress Eleanor Fitzpatrick and Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon Joust at EK50

Mistress Eleanor Fitzpatrick and Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon Joust at EK50

  • First, a “helmschau” to display (a minimum of) the rider’s helm, helm crest, and their banner.
  • Second, a heraldic presentation of the rider into the arena
  • Third, the actual joust

The helmschau and heraldic presentation were judged by the king-at-arms, Duke Brion Tarragon, and by three noble ladies, Duchess Anna Tarragon, Duchess Katherine Stanhope and Countess Mathilde de Cadene.

The Helmschau was worth 5 points:

  • Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon: 4 pts
  • Mistress Eleanor Fitzpatrick: 5 pts
  • The learned Ken Mondschein, a visitor to these lands: 2 pts

The Heraldic Presentation was worth 5 points:

  • Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon: 4 pts
  • Mistress Eleanor Fitzpatrick: 5 pts
  • The learned Ken Mondschein, a visitor to these lands: 2 pts

The Joust was intended to have 27 points possible (3 opponents, 3 passes each), but only wound up with 18 points possible (because each person only had 2 opponents as the tournament was called due to the heat, and because of a mishap).

  • Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon: 18 pts
  • Mistress Eleanor Fitzpatrick: 9 pts
  • The learned Ken Mondschein, a visitor to these lands: 1 pt
Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon at EK50

Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon presents his banner to the crowd during his heraldic presentation into the arena

The outcome of the overall tournament was

  • 1st: Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon – 26 pts
  • 2nd: Mistress Eleanor Fitzpatrick – 19 pts
  • 3rd: The learned Ken Mondschein, a visitor to these lands – 5 pts

One additional competitor was disqualified from the tournament altogether (and their scores in the previous phases omitted) after striking their opponent’s horse with their lance during the joust.

A major element that we preach with both foam lance jousting and wooden lance jousting is that we cannot tolerate having a horse get struck.  The disqualified competitor must go back and train a lot more with lance and quintain, and must demonstrate good lance control and follow-through, before they will be allowed to attempt another authorization.

The skills challenge portion of the competition for King’s and Queen’s Equestrian Champions was held last night, with results announced in court earlier today.  Many thanks to the outgoing King’s Champion, Baroness Alanna of Skye, for sending us detailed results and tracking down details as the Gazette staff realized they were needed for this article.

The original plan had been to have a final round with a limited number of competitors after completion of the skills challenge, but the heat this weekend has been dangerously high, and it was decided that for the safety of the horses to cancel the final round, and select the champions based on their combined performance in the two courses which had already been run, weighted equally.

Horses are as susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke as humans, and our competition asks them to perform strenuous athletic activity while carrying 200 pounds or so of rider and armor.   Most of them will be resting today, and going home tonight when it will be cooler in the trailers.  The safety of the horses comes first.

The winner of the competition, and King’s Champion of Horse is Duchess Kiena Stewart, riding Brady.

Duchess Kiena Stewart, King's Equestrian Champion

Her Majesty Caoilfhionn selected Lady Leana Doucet, riding Taro, as her Champion.

The skills challenge for the evening round consisted of running at rings with a lance, chopping apples with swords, and spearing targets from horseback.

Apple chop is not something commonly seen in SCA competition.  As the name suggests, riders attempt to strike an apple with a sword as they ride past at the best speed at which they judge they can hit the target. Adult competitors have the option of using live steel or a wooden sword. Four points are awarded for splitting the apple, two for seriously damaging it, and one for hitting it in any fashion. Generally if you use a wooden sword you can only get a hit, but Zachary Kerr, age 9, chopped his wooden sword down so firmly on the last apple of the night that it split cleanly in two!

A total of 21 riders completed all portions of the tourney.

The top 4 competitors in the evening portion of the tourney were:

  • Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon riding Hottie
  • Mistress Doucette de Verdun riding Baby War Pony
  • Duchess Kiena Stewart riding Brady
  • Angelique de conte riding The Dread Pirate Roberts

The top 4 competitors overall were:

  • Duchess Kiena Stewart riding Brady
  • Mistress Doucette de Verdun riding Baby War Pony
  • Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon riding Hottie
  • Duke Randal of the Dark riding Jubal

equestrian, King and Queen's Champions

Because of the anticipated extreme heat this weekend, a decision was made well in advance to split the Equestrian Champions competition into a morning session and an evening session, with the evening session expected to start at 8 pm.

The morning session was a challenge course, in the style known as Gambler’s Choice.  In this type of competition, riders are presented with a variety of obstacles or games, which can give them varying numbers of points.  Each rider is allowed to assemble a course which they hope will complement their skills and the best qualities of their horse while also maximizing the number of points they will be awarded for completing it successfully.

This morning saw 24 riders competing at the challenge course, which really showcases the depth of the East Kingdom Equestrian activity.  In its early years an event with 5 riders was considered well attended.

At the end of the challenge course, the top four competitors are:

  • Duchess Kiena Stewart riding Brady
  • Mistress Doucette de Verdun riding Baby War Pony
  • Master Duncan Kerr riding Brandy
  • Duke Randal of the Dark riding Jubal

Note that this is not a final 4 – all riders will continue to compete in the Skills tests which will take place this evening, after the heat of the day has passed.  At the end of that portion of competition, finalists will be determined, and the eventual Champions selected.  Anyone can still win it!

Hear now the words of Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon, Society Equestrian Marshall, who will be visiting the East for the Fifty Year Celebration:

Unto the nobles of the East Kingdom does Master Terafan Greydragon send greetings!

Let all princes, lords, ladies, barons, knights, squires and men-at-arms of the East Kingdom, and all other noble kingdoms, who are not banished or enemies of the king, our lord, know that at the East Kingdom Fifty Year celebration there will be a great festival of arms and a very noble jousting tournament with lances of one measure, appropriate armor, with crests, and coats covered with the arms of the noble tourneyers, as is the ancient custom; And at this tourney there will be noble and rich prizes given by ladies and damsels.

Be it known, that I Master Rhys Terafan Greydragon, Companion of the Laurel, Companion of the Pelican, and Premier of the Golden Lance of Atlantia, in honor and celebration of the East Kingdom’s many years of glory, am hosting this noble jousting tournament.  I do challenge all riders of the East Kingdom’s various marches, and all others from whatsoever kingdoms they are, not banished or enemies of the king, our lord, who wish to acquire honour, to compete in this tournament.

Moreover, I announce to all of you princes, lords, ladies, barons, knights, squires and men-at-arms who intend to participate in the tourney that you must come to the stable the day before the day of the tourney, and display your arms at the windows and your crests to the judges, on pain of not being allowed to participate; each of you must bring your helm, with the crest which you intend to wear at the tourney, and your banner, at the seventh hour after the noon, to the stable.  You will set them up so that at eight o’clock, the ladies can come and see and give their opinions to the judges, and this I tell you on behalf of my lords the judges, so please excuse me.

Sir Ankara and Baron Duncan Kerr joust at a previous event.Lastly, all who intend to participate in the tourney must be arrayed in appropriate armor and coats of arms, and astride your destriers covered with your arms so that all who may see your prowess and skill with the lance may know you.  Be ready to enter the arena at nine of the clock the day of the tourney, and have your herald present you to the crowns, the ladies, and damsels who will watch your displays of skill.  Once presented, the rules of the tourney will be announced, and jousters will then retire to make final preparations.

The populace is invited to attend and cheer on the competitors, beginning at 9 AM.

There will be numerous equestrian activities in addition to the joust.
  • To Ride Before a Prince – a competition in which individuals ride specific maneuvers which are chosen to display the skills of both horse and rider in a non-martial setting. Some general information on the concept can be found here: http://howtoridebeforeaprince.blogspot.com/
  • Baroness Lillian Stanhope and Dakota TesoroA separate competition will be held to determine Their Majesties’ Equestrian Champions on Saturday. The exact format of the competition is designed by the current Champions, and is generally not announced in detail beforehand. Typically there is a challenge course which requires rider and horse to negotiate obstacles, and a competition in martial skill games, not including jousting.
  • A Carousel will be held on Sunday afternoon.  This is a non-competitive group ride in a choreographed pattern.  This requires a different set of skills that the martial games, as participants must exercise fine control over their mounts, and cooperate with each other to maintain their spacing in spite of differences in horse size, gaits, and temperament.

Spectators are welcome at all of these activities.

equestrian, Kings and Queens Champions

Yesterday the annual tourney to choose the King’s and Queen’s Equestrian Champions was hosted by the Shire of Quintavia, at the Hazel Grove Agricultural Association in Groton, MA. Unlike most of the Kingdom Champions tourneys, the site does not rotate between regions. Sites suitable for equestrian tourneys are relatively uncommon, so bids are encouraged from sites which are central to the locations of the kingdom’s active equestrians. The date also varies, but late summer or early fall are generally preferred, both to allow for the championship to fall toward the end of the competition season, and to avoid the hottest part of the summer, in the interests of protecting the horses from unnecessary heat stress.

Queen Avelina and Princess Anna choose their Queen's Champion

Queen Avelina and Princess Anna choose their Queen’s Champion

The new Champions are Baroness Lillian Stanhope, chosen as King’s Champion, and Viscountess Gwenllhian Rhiannon of Dragon Keep, chosen as Queen’s Champion.

Baroness Lillian Stanhope and Dakota Tesoro

Baroness Lillian Stanhope and Dakota Tesoro

Baroness Lillian has a long history of involvement with equestrian arts in the East. She was previously chosen as Queen’s Champion of Horse by Gregor IV and Kienna II in 2013. Both her parents, Duke Randal of the Dark and Duchess Katherine Stanhope, are active equestrians, and Baroness Lillian has been riding at East Kingdom events since her very early years. The King’s Champion is, by tradition, the winner of the competition, which is a test of prowess in mounted  martial arts designed by the outgoing Champions.

Viscountess Gwenllhian and Jubilant

Viscountess Gwenllhian and Jubilant

Viscountess Gwenllhian is an accomplished horsewoman, but has only recently begun to participate formally in the equestrian arts within the SCA. This was her first entry in a champions tourney. She has resided in multiple kingdoms over the course of her Society career. She served as Princess of Drachenwald (prior to its separation from the East), was inducted into the Order of Chivalry as a Master of Arms in the West, and was made a Companion of the Order of the Pelican after returning to the East.

The Queen’s Champion is chosen by Her Majesty, according to whatever criteria may seem good to her, often in consultation with the Princess, since the Champion will also serve her successor.

Equestrian competition is truly a partnership between horse and rider, so we should not leave them out.

Catalina de Valencia and Dakota Tesoro

Catalina de Valencia and Dakota Tesoro

Dakota Tesoro, affectionately known in equestrian circles as Te, owned by Baron Duncan Kerr, carried Baroness Lillian to victory. Te is a 21 year old Andalusian gelding, with more than 10 years of tournament experience. In his career, including this most recent tourney,  he has carried five King’s or Queen’s champions to victory.

Jubilant, a 21 year old Morgan gelding belonging to Viscountess Gwenllhian, was her mount for the tourney. This was Jubilant’s first East Kingdom equestrian event. Viscountess Gwenllhian reports that he enjoyed the experience.
