Greetings to the tourney heralds and list runners of the East and Tir Mara from Don Lucien de Wyntere, Troubadour Herald!

We have several events coming up in the next few months.

On Saturday, May 5th, there will be Crown Tourney in the Barony of Ruantallan in the Crown Principality of Tir Mara. We’ll need voice heralds for the lists plus list-runners and support for shield trees. If you think you’d like to help in either capacity, please reach out to me at Troubadour@EastKingdom.org. If you haven’t heralded or run lists before but would like to try, we will be happy to provide on-the-job training and support. We work with kids ages 8 and up for list running.

If you are a Crown Combatant or the artist for one, here is the link for how to make a device for the shield tree (Instructions Here)

Shortly after that, at Sommer Draw, June 1-3rd , will be the King’s and Queen’s Armored Champions Tourney in the Barony of Bergental. Again, we’re looking for both experienced heralds and list-runners and those who want to learn.

Please reach out to me at Troubadour@EastKingdom.org if you would like to help or want to learn. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you on the field!

EASTERN RESULTS FROM THE JANUARY 2018 LoAR

The Society College of Arms runs on monthly cycles and letters. Each month, the College processes name and armory submissions from all of the Kingdoms. Final decisions on submissions are made at the monthly meetings of the Pelican Queen of Arms (names) and the Wreath King of Arms (armory). Pelican and Wreath then write up their decisions in a Letter of Acceptances and Return (LoAR). After review and proofreading, LoARs generally are released two months after the meeting where the decisions are made.

An “acceptance” indicates that the item(s) listed are now registered with the Society. A “return” indicates that the item is returned to the submitter for additional work. Most items are registered without comments. Sometimes, the LoAR will address specific issues about the name or armory or will praise the submitter/herald on putting together a very nice historically accurate item.

The following results are from the January 2018 Wreath and Pelican meetings.   Continue reading →

Most items are registered without comments. Sometimes, the LoAR will address specific issues about the name or armory or will praise the submitter/herald on putting together a very nice historically accurate item.

The following results are from the December 2017 Wreath and Pelican meetings.

EAST acceptances

Æsa Ormstunga. Name and device. Purpure, a chevron rompu inverted and in chief a serpent in annulo vorant of its own tail argent.

Submitted as Aesa Ormstunga, the submitted spelling of the given name was not supported by the documentation. We have changed the given name to the attested spelling Æsa for registration.

Aiden Underhill. Device. Argent, a trimount couped within an orle of two vines entwined vert.

Birna Ottarsdottir. Name.

Nice 9th-10th century Icelandic name!

Chana Freidl the Maker. Name.

The Letter of Intent argued that the Maker is a lingua Anglica form of the period German byname der Macher. The byname der Macher is supported by the attested German byname (in the genitive form) dicti Macher; for occupational bynames, der X was used interchangeably with dictus X in German.

Eleanor Falleinthewelle. Name and device. Or, in pale a nightingale perched atop a rose proper within a bordure embattled purpure.

Nice 14th century English name!

Finnguala ingen Néill meic Chuircc. Badge. (Fieldless) On a swan naiant argent three lozenges in fess vert.

Marrin ny Rowrke. Name and device. Argent chaussé azure, a wolf sejant sable and in chief a compass star between an increscent and a decrescent gules.

Nice Anglicized Irish name for circa 1600!

There is a step from period practice for use of a compass star.

Medb ingen Chinn Fáelad. Name.

Orlando di Sforza. Badge. (Fieldless) On a cross crosslet fitchy Or a cross couped fitchy sable.

Artist’s note: Please draw the fitched points of the crosses correctly as smoothly tapering spikes, in keeping with period practice.

Pypa Ravenild. Name.

Nice 13th century English name!

Thomas von Dresden. Name.

Nice late 15th century German name!

Ziacomo Foscari. Name.

The submitter requested authenticity for “15th Century Venice.” This request was not summarized on the Letter of Intent. Fortunately, we had sufficient information to determine authenticity without having to pend the name. This name does not meet the submitter’s request because we were unable to find evidence of Ziacomo until 1647, just before the cut off for acceptable documentation. However, this name is registerable.

Greetings from Lord Conn mac Branain, Chair of the Tir Mara Populace Badge Committee.

The process for selecting a populace badge for Tir Mara progresses.  We have finished evaluating the submissions received and are now ready to proceed to the next step: consulting the people of Tir Mara.

Five designs have been selected for consideration.  We feel an online poll utilizing a ranked ballot is the best approach.  The designs are available to view on the Principality website as well as in the poll itself, https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XRC6TZM.  Please rank the submissions in order of preference from 1 to 5, with 1 being the most preferred and 5 the least preferred.

The poll will run until the midnight, 28th February, at which point we will make the results known and present them to Their Royal Highnesses for consideration.

Most items are registered without comments. Sometimes, the LoAR will address specific issues about the name or armory or will praise the submitter/herald on putting together a very nice historically accurate item.

The following results are from the October 2017 Wreath and Pelican meetings.

EAST acceptances

Ádísa Grímólfsdóttir. Name and device. Per bend argent and gules, an increscent and a unicorn contourny counterchanged crined Or.

Appearing on the Letter of Intent as Rhiannon Grímólfsdóttir, Kingdom issued a timely correction of the name to Ádísa Grímólfsdóttir. In the corrected form, it is a registerable Old Norse name.

Albrecht Østergaard. Device. Per pale Or and gules, a raven displayed sable between three towers, a bordure counterchanged.

There is a step from period practice for use of a non-eagle displayed.

Aleydis van der Veere. Name and device. Per bend embattled argent and purpure, two lotus blossoms in profile counterchanged vert and argent.

Nice 14th century Dutch/Flemish name!

Artist’s note: Please draw the lotus blossoms as cup-shaped flowers, and the embattlements bigger and bolder.

Christophe de Frisselle. Device. Azure, a pale checky sable and argent.

Nice device!

The submitter has permission to conflict with the badge of the Shire of Caer Adamant, Azure, a pale vert fimbriated Or.

Gregori Rogue Montana. Name.

Joel Messerer. Name.

Katharine Slough. Device. Or, a sexfoil and a bordure wavy purpure.

Mari Clock van Hoorne. Badge. (Fieldless) On the forehead of a skull Or a card pique sable.

Artist’s note: Please fill in the eye and nasal cavities in the tincture of the skull.

Morwill MacShane. Badge. (Fieldless) Two fish hooks in saltire sable.

Nice badge!

Ráðúlfr Grímólfsson. Name and device. Per chevron throughout raguly gules and argent, two Thor’s hammers argent and a bat-winged wolf sejant sable.

Nice 9th-10th century Icelandic name!

Sitt al-Gharb ha-niqret Khazariyya. Badge. (Fieldless) Two winged monkeys combatant each maintaining two daggers, the center daggers in saltire Or.

Symon van Moordrecht. Name change from Symon Fitz Gilbert (see RETURNS for badge).

The Letter of Intent did not document Moordrecht as a period spelling of the place name. However, after the close of commentary, Yehuda Blue Tyger found a 1625 Dutch record for a Cornelis Janszn Moordrecht. Therefore, we can register this name as submitted.

The submitter’s previous name, Symon Fitz Gilbert, is released.

Theodoric of Malagentia. Name and device. Purpure, on a natural sea tortoise Or a bear’s paw print sable.

Malagentia is the registered name of an SCA branch.

There is a step from period practice for use of a paw print.

Wilhelm van Hammaburc. Name and device. Per pale wavy argent and gules, two horses rampant addorsed counterchanged.

EAST returns

Danielle de Lorraine. Device. Azure, a serpent involved and on a chief argent a bow palewise reversed between two musical notes azure.

This device is returned for violation of SENA A2C1, which requires that charges be depicted in their period formats. The musical notes in this submission have flags that extend horizontally, like a pennon. Period musical notation, if they used flags at all, drooped them vertically, and even folded them back onto the stem, to save space on the page. This depiction of musical notes doesn’t show up until well past even the grey period.

Piers Campbell. Badge. (Fieldless) A saltire couped and overall a boar’s head couped close argent.

This badge must be returned for identifiability issues. The overall charge obscures the saltire, which is compounded by the charges being the same tincture. Upon resubmission, either one of the charges should be made a different tincture, or the head should be redrawn so as not to obscure the saltire, or both.

Symon van Moordrecht. Badge. (Fieldless) A calamarie sable.

This badge must be returned for conflict with Athanasius Lacedaemonius, Argent, a calamarie sable. There is a single DC for fieldlessness.

Most items are registered without comments. Sometimes, the LoAR will address specific issues about the name or armory or will praise the submitter/herald on putting together a very nice historically accurate item.

The following results are from the September 2017 Wreath and Pelican meetings.

EAST acceptances

Chiara Foscari. Name.

The submitter requested authenticity for 15th Century Venice. This name appears to meet that request.

Cristina Volpina. Household name House of the Golden Schelle and badge. (Fieldless) An escallop bendwise Or.

Nice late 14th century inn-sign household name!

Damian Ísólfsson. Name and device. Vert, a wolf rampant and in chief two crosses of Saint Brigid argent.

This name combines a Russian given name from 1148 with a Scandinavian byname from 1254, an acceptable lingual mix under Appendix C.

There is a step from period practice for the use of crosses of Saint Brigid.

Artist’s note: Please draw the crosses larger to fill the available space.

Damian Ísólfsson. Badge. (Fieldless) On a wolf’s paw print vert the rune Dagaz argent.

Commenters questioned whether a tertiary charge on a disjointed primary or secondary charge would need to overlie all parts of the charge. This is not the case. Unless specifically blazoned, such a tertiary charge would appear on the largest part of the charge (in this case, the central pad).

There is a step from period practice for use of a paw print.

Artist’s note: Please draw the rune larger, to fill the available space.

Dash Altan. Name.

This name was pended on the April 2017 Letter of Acceptances and Returns to allow commentary on the submitter’s request for authenticity for mid-13th century Mongol, which had not been summarized on the Letter of Intent. After the name was pended, the submitter dropped the authenticity request.

The submitter may be interested to know that this name is probably authentic for mid-13th century Mongol, although it would be more usually transliterated as Ta{sv} Altan. The {sv} code represents an s marked with a small v at the top, a character not found in English.

Dionise O Towie. Device. Azure, on a pale purpure fimbriated argent a domestic cat sejant guardant Or.

Eudes de Creully. Blazon correction (see RETURNS for other blazon correction). Purpure, a bend sinister ermine, overall a falcon Or.

Originally registered in December 2016 as Purpure, a bend sinister ermine, overall a falcon hooded Or, an artist’s note read: “Please let the submitter know that if a falcon is hooded, you cannot see its eyes, but without the hood there would be no tuft on the top of its head.” This note is appropriate for either blazon.

Guillermo Solario. Name and device. Per saltire sable and gules, a sun in his splendour argent.

This name combines a Spanish or Catalan given name with an Italian byname, an acceptable lingual mix under Appendix C.

The submitter has permission to conflict with Cosmo Solario, Per saltire sable and azure, a sun in his splendor argent, and with Giuseppe Ferraro, Per saltire sable and gules, on a mullet of eight points argent a rose gules.

Marcus Marius Felix. Name and device. Vert, two lynxes sejant addorsed argent.

Nice classical Roman name!

Mari Clock van Hoorne. Badge. (Fieldless) A domestic cat rampant contourny sable.

Nice badge!

Ravensdale, Stronghold of. Device. Per chevron inverted embattled argent and vert, in pale a raven displayed sable maintaining an apple branch fesswise vert fructed gules and a laurel wreath argent.

There is a step from period practice for the use of a bird displayed other than an eagle.

Roland le Taillefer. Name and device. Argent, an axe-head azure.

Nice device!

Síle Dhubh inghean Mhic an Mhadaidh. Device. Sable, an eagle rising wings displayed maintaining three annulets interlaced one and two argent.

Artist’s note: Please draw all charges larger, to fill the available space.

Sofya Gianetta di Trieste. Device. Or, a fleur-de-lys and on a chief gules two mullets of eight points Or.

Sofya Gianetta di Trieste. Badge. Or, a fleur-de-lys within an orle gules.

Nice badge!

EAST returns

Eudes de Creully and Eyda von Rothenburg. Blazon correction. (Fieldless) On a cup Or a falcon’s head erased gules.

Originally registered in December 2016 as On a cup Or a hooded falcon’s head erased gules, an artist’s note read: “Please let the submitter know that if a falcon is hooded, you cannot see its eyes, but without the hood there would be no tuft on the top of its head.” While we have reblazoned the full falcon in the device on this same letter, we are less inclined to change the blazon when it’s just the head. The tufts at the top of the head make up a good 15-20% of the height of the charge, and the hood (or lack thereof) is almost the entirety of the charge. Therefore, the tuft cannot be dismissed with an artist’s note as easily on this badge as it could on the device. Because the tuft affects the silhouette of the charge, it gives the unmistakable appearance of being part of a hawk’s hood.

If the submitters wish to have a hood-less falcon, they are encouraged to submit a badge change with a smooth-headed falcon

I want to announce a change in officers for the Crown Principality.  I have appointed to the role of Badger Herald, the Tir Mara Regional Deputy and primary point of heraldic contact for the Crown Principality, Behi Kirsa Oyutai.  We have worked together numerous times, and I know she is passionate about her work, and enthusiastic to serve.  I am looking forward to Kirsa’s new service to the Kingdom and Crown Principality.  This appointment is effective as of this missive.

I want to take a moment to thank the outgoing Badger Herald, Lord Diarmaid O Briain, for his service.

The East Kingdom College of Heralds continues to be one of the finest in the Knowne World, and I have outstanding deputies who make it so.  Thank you all for your continued hard work.
