His Highness Luis de Castilla and Her Highness Margarita de’ Siena will step up in October as the next King and Queen of the East. They agreed to be interviewed, to help the Populace get to know them a little better. Luis plays as 1st Crusader from the Kingdom of Castilla (Spain) from the Year of our Lord 1095. Margarita plays as an Italian Country Courtesan.
How did you get involved in the SCA? Margarita: I was introduced by a co-worker, Bera. She would come in during my lunch time and be like I have a hobby you will like. I finally gave in and fell in love. My first event was Siege of Glengary, in AE. I enjoyed watching the fighting, but then my friend took me to the kitchen, and I spent the rest of the day there. I helped serve and was so excited.
Luis: Back in 1995 I was going to go to Gencon in Wisconsin, and my current girlfriend convinced me that we were going to go to this thing called “Pennsic.” Pennsic 25 (1995) was my first event. The reason that made me return was the people – the comradery.
Do you have a particular passion in the game? Luis: Big Surprise…. Heavy Weapons Combat. It’s a passion I started in 1997 and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Margarita: I love Bardic for me! I enjoy getting to sing and will do so randomly. I also love to cook.
What are your goals for your reign? Luis: Not Mess up. Seriously though, to go to the Places in our Kingdom that NEVER get to see Royals. We are a Huge Kingdom. I think people want to see RP’s in new places.
Margarita: To help better the SCA for the populous and the East. This sounds like a lofty goal until you remember a simple word of kindness or a thank you can make the SCA better for someone. I hope that everyone will see and/or feel that and pass it on.
What challenges to you believe the East is facing today? Margarita: I think the East and all the SCA faces the challenge of being a family organization and meeting those expectations. It is hard for parents to come to events for many reasons. One thing can be cost. I would challenge all Autocrats to look at their budgets. Can you get away with not charging for children? Worried about day boards? Charge $2 or $3 for a child to eat day board instead of a whole gate fee. Make sure when you are planning that you have something for children of all ages.
Luis: We are challenged by the lack of new members. We are slowly getting older and we are disappearing. And yes, the other issue is expense. Everything costs a lot more! People starting in our Game are utterly shell shocked at the cost.
Is there a person who has been influential to you during your time in the SCA? Margarita: Oh my… YES! Quite a few people. I have been so very lucky in that regard!
Luis: My 1st Knight, Sir Sirhan Al Cyani Akarel Diablu (Deo). Yup, that Saracen has gotten me in more trouble than anything else. He’s My Older Brother/ Instigator/Friend…. What else did I need? Thank you Old man.
My 2nd Knight, Baron Sir Master of the Pelican Manfred Von Halsstern. He was the one that made me work at becoming a Knight and a Peer. Thank you Manfredo.
The Entire NUTLEY Crew. Steel Sharpens Steel. It has been a fun painful ride…lol.
VDK. In particular 2 Knights: Duke Brennan Mac Feargus and Culann Mac Cianain: You know when you need 2 Buddies to push you that much harder??? Well I think this quote sums up how MASSIVELY Influential these two have been. “I THOUGHT YOU WERE AN EASTERN KNIGHT….?”
A Couple of Out of Kingdom Names. Last ones I promise: His Majesty, Hauvoc of the West; Duke Sean Tarragon; His Highness, Hans of the West; Her Highness Helga of the West.
All of them have made me a better combatant by teaching and working with me for the past 5 years. #WEASTIES!!!
Do you have any advice to give to newcomers? Old-timers? Margarita: Newcomers- Have fun! Try everything and anything you want. You never know what you will find. Old-timers- Remember that feeling of discovery you had when you were first joining. Be the person you would have wanted to meet back then.
Luis: Newcomers: Breathe. Relax. We were all new at some point. You DO NOT HAVE TO BE PERFECT. Veteran SCA Members: Breathe. Relax. You have received tons of awards. You are known throughout the Kingdom… and you can destroy someone’s dream with a careless comment or bad attitude. Remember when you looked up to a Knight/Laurel/Pelican/Baron etc. How tainted would you have been if that person had treated you like garbage?
For Both: It’s a Game. Remember that. People are going to mess up. OK…. So what? We ALL mess up. Try and remember that.
What are you most looking forward to during your reign? Margarita: Being able to recognize the people of the East for their amazing talents. And to have fun with the Kids.
Luis: To experience the Pageantry that is our game. Be it from Combat. Arts, Music, Cooking, etc.
Any other thoughts to share? Luis: That I am so excited to enjoy this experience and honor with all of you. I’m not a very eloquent speaker. I tend to speak from my heart….ORIENTALIS VICTORIA! Margarita: Keep your eyes open. We have a few surprises planned for everyone.
