Many activities were rained out at SCA events in the Northeast last weekend, but not the Laurels versus Pelicans boffer fundraiser. Holding a melee out of doors as originally planned was impossible in the mud and rain, but Mistress Anastasia, former Kingdom Mistress of Lists, suggested a format change. The tables were pushed back in the large dining hall, and one-on-one bouts were held in the round for the entertainment of the damp event attendees. Continue reading
Some of the Laurels and Pelicans headed out into their fundraiser at Panteria with boffer weapons that were built specifically for them. These peers proposed “specialty weapons” which they would get to use only if they raised enough money. The weapons added humor to the already lively bouts.
Baroness Leonete D’Angely has once again turned out a “Betting Man’s Guide” for the Laurels vs. Pelicans boffer melees along with her father and partner in crime, Master Liam St. Liam. Guides cost $1. You can buy them online or in person at the Laurels vs. Pelicans melee at Panteria.
To buy a copy online, go to www.laurelsvspelicans.com and contribute $1 using the PayPal button. A pdf of the Guide will be sent to your email address. Your donation will go to the Pennsic war chest and help fund Pennsic activities such as the Knowne World Party which is going to be held after opening ceremonies.
Baroness Katherine Barr, former Seneschale of the East, evened up the sides in the Laurels vs. Pelicans melee by joining the Pelicans yesterday. “I thought I would give the Laurels a fighting chance by not using my shield and sword, Dietrich, from last year.”
Fundraising for the melee was supposed to end tonight so the weapons makers had time to construct specialty weapons. Sir Michael of York and Lord Gregory of York, who build the weapons with a team of volunteers, have offered to extend the deadline. Continue reading
Queen Kiena, beautiful and fierce inspiration to King Gregor, will get on her hobby horse armed with a boffer lance to slay Laurels on Saturday, May 25th at Panteria. Her Majesty has joined the Laurels vs. Pelicans fundraiser for the Pennsic War Chest on the side of the Pelicans. The Pennsic War Chest helps fund the Knowne World Party, Royalty Dinner and other Pennsic activities.
With the addition of Her Majesty, Mistresses Catrin and Eleanor moved from the Pelican to the Laurel side to even up the numbers. A good time for the watching crowd is the goal of the melees, which also explains weapons forms like broom, feather of doom and oar.
The current tallies for the participants are listed below. If you want to help the crowd have fun, the peers have weapons and fund Pennsic activities, you can donate to a peer at www.laurelsvspelicans.com. Don’t let a peer go out armed with only a dagger against Her Majesty’s steed and lance!

The Laurels vs. Pelicans will be fighting in a boffer melee to raise money for the Pennsic War Chest. The War Chest supports Pennsic related expenses associated with the Royalty such as the Known World Party (which will happen after opening ceremonies), the Royalty dinner and the Queen’s Tea. Rumor is that the Known World Party is something the populace will not want to miss this year.
More pelicans have joined. Despontissa Margarita Kofinopoia, the Scourge of Somethingorother, hopes to take the field with a broom; Maestro Dorio of the Oaks, The Peaceful Negotiator, wants a Feather of Doom; and Master Ulric von der Insel is fundraising for a Giant Spoon. The Laurels gained Mistress Eva Woderose, The Killigrapher.
The most senior peer in the melees, Master Leiftameon, added a specialty weapon of juggling clubs. He received his Laurel thirty-three years ago. If he makes the $100 level, the weapon makers will make clubs balance them so he can juggle them on the field.
Mistress Mirabel has already raised enough money to get a sheep, Mistress Dzioginte gets a shovel and Master Edward will have Cuddles, the Giant Scorpion of Doom. Other peers are still in need of some fun weapons that the crowd will love. You can see who you might want to support – and help support some Pennsic fun at www.laurelsvspelicans.com.
Once again, the Laurels and Pelicans of the East Kingdom will take to the field with boffer weapons and a sense of humor to raise money for the Kingdom. They will face off in melees for honor, glory and the laughter of the crowd at Panteria XVIII in the Shire of Panther Vale (Thetford, VT) . The peerage that takes the best two out of three will be declared the winner.
Laurels and Pelicans are currently being recruited for this good humored mayhem. Participants will be announced around May 6th at LaurelsvsPelicans.com. Cut-off for donations will be May 18th, so weapons can be made. Panteria is also host to order meetings for both peerages.
The boffer weapons that the peers can use are determined by how much money they raise. They range from a dagger for $25 to a specialty weapon for $100. Specialty weapons were popular last year and included a giant ladle, a quill pen, Grendel’s arm and a bourbon bottle. Continue reading
Laurels and Pelicans took to the field with boffers last year and raised over $3,200 for the Royal Travel Fund. They faced off in three melees, and Pelicans took bragging rights by winning best two out of three. This year there will be a rematch at Panteria in May.
Two of last year’s favorite parts – silly specialty weapons and fighting nicknames – will be back. Last year the 24 peers taking part included the Kountess of Kaos, Mistress of Mayhem, Countess Plays Like Husky, Demon Queen of Heraldry, Baroness Happy Pants and The Killigrapher. The weapons they used depended on how much money they raised.
Weapons ranged from $25 for a single dagger to $100 for specialty weapons. Specialty weapons included a boffer rose, perm of death (flail wearing a wig), giant ladle, bourbon bottle, Grendel’s severed arm and a very large clipboard.
Mistress Katherine Barr of Cumberland had the most unusual weapon form, namely Master Dietrich Schwelgengräber. They bet each other who could raise the most money. She won and wielded him as her weapon.
This year’s melees will again be sponsored by Fergus MacRae, Baron Carolingia. Laurels or Pelicans who would like to participate should contact Mistress Catrin o’r Rhyd For or Countess Svava Þorgeirsdóttir. More information on how to sponsor a participant will be available at the Laurels vs. Pelicans website, where you can currently see photos of last year’s competitors
